Two people were killed and around 300 were evacuated from their homes on Sunday as bad weather pounded northern Italy, the Ansa news agency said.

A father and son died near the northern city of Milan after being knocked into a river by a falling tree as they were out walking, Ansa reported.

Farther north, near the border with Switzerland, 300 people were evacuated from several towns as land and mud slides buried houses.

Evacuees were given refuge in hotels throughout the region, waiting for calmer weather forecast for Monday.
