Poland will build its first nuclear power plant by 2020 to bolster the energy security of the EU member, Economy Minister Waldemar Pawlak said Tuesday.
"We have adopted a four-stage road map … with construction of the power plant from 2016-2020," Pawlak said after a cabinet meeting in Warsaw.
Legislative work to clear the way for the project will be completed by 2010, he said, while the site, technology and construction contract will be agreed during the second stage lasting 2011-2013.
Technical plans and preparatory construction work are to be completed 2014-15, Pawlak added.
Coal-rich Poland is trying to reduce its reliance on the greenhouse gas-producing fuel which provides 94 percent of its electricity in order to meet the terms of the EU's climate change package which requires members to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by 2020, compared with 1990 levels.
