A US air strike overnight Wednesday killed eight people, including a judge, in the central city of Tikrit, the hometown of executed dictator Saddam Hussein, a local police officer said.

The US military confirmed an operation in Tikrit in which "several civilians" were wounded and killed.

It did not specify the number of casualties.

An Iraqi police officer from Tikrit, on condition of anonymity, said eight people from one family were killed, including a judge, when their home in the city's Al-Qadisiyah neighbourhood was struck in a US air strike.
