New Solution For Portable GPS Market
Austin TX (SPX) Apr 23, 2008 SigmaTel has introduced a complete processor solution for the portable navigation GPS market, enabling lower system costs for portable navigation devices (PNDs) and expanding the company's consumer product platform offerings. The SigmaTel STMP3738 semiconductor solution is a highly-integrated SoC which eliminates up to 12 previously-discrete ICs typically found in PND devices. Supporting WinCE5, WinCE6 and Linux operating systems, the STMP3738 allows customers to quickly develop and introduce PND products into the market at attractive price points. "We are excited to be entering a new high growth consumer market that capitalizes on our mixed-signal integration and performance capabilities," said Glen Burchers, director of marketing for SigmaTel. "With the STMP3738, PND BOM cost is reduced by 15% and board space by 30%, without sacrificing performance. Furthermore, the STMP3738 is based on the flagship 3700 processor family of which SigmaTel has already shipped millions." The 90nm STMP3700 family uses an ARM9 processor coupled with on-chip audio and power management functions. Unlike other ARM9 based ICs, the SigmaTel device integrates the analog functions on the same silicon die as the processor. In addition, the power management functions, typically spread across several analog ICs, are also integrated into the STMP3738 resulting in significant overall cost savings. "SigmaTel delivers world-class performance and mixed-signal integration at an unparalleled cost point," added Burchers. Available now, the STMP3738 supports popular GPS solutions including: Broadcom, SiRF and NXP. "We are impressed with the integration level and performance of SigmaTel's STMP3738," said Kevin Strong, director of product marketing for GPS products, NXP Semiconductors. "Combined with our latest GNS7560 GPS SoC, we believe it provides a compelling solution for the high volume entry level PND market. We are excited to work with SigmaTel for development of this latest segment of the rapidly growing PND market." Both Linux and WinCE operating systems ports are available from SigmaTel. All popular map application software and map databases are compatible with the SigmaTel processor. 10K pricing is $4.50 for the STMP3738 in a 169 pin BGA package. High volume production is available now. Related Links the missing link GPS Applications, Technology and Suppliers
