NAVTEQ and El Palacio de Hierro Launch Interactive GPS Zones
Chicago IL (SPX) Sep 09, 2008 NAVTEQ has teamed-up with El Palacio de Hierro, one of the leading department stores in Mexico, to implement GPS Zones in ten retail stores located in Mexico City, Monterrey, Puebla and Guadalajara. As the first major department store in Mexico to strategically promote GPS navigation, El Palacio de Hierro began rolling out GPS Zones in stores throughout Mexico in late August. GPS Zones are interactive kiosks that help educate consumers on the benefits of navigation using educational tools like collateral and videos. Additionally, they provide consumers with the opportunity to interact with and test out the latest, premium brand Portable Navigation Devices (PNDs), like Garmin, Magellan, Mio and Panasonic, which incorporate the NAVTEQ map for Mexico. "As the first and only comprehensive, navigable map supplier to PNDs in Mexico, we are pleased to launch the GPS Zones with a retail leader like El Palacio de Hierro," stated Jim Dineen, director and general manager + Latin America, NAVTEQ. "We believe that the GPS Zones will provide El Palacio de Hierro's unique customer base with the opportunity to easily and effectively educate themselves on the benefits of GPS and navigation in order to purchase a PND that truly fits their lifestyle." "The demand for GPS products in Mexico is rapidly growing and we are pleased to work with NAVTEQ on the GPS Zones in order to offer this innovative buying concept to our customers," stated Virgilio Culebro Pena + Electronics Sub-director, El Palacio de Hierro. "We were able to quickly conceptualize and produce the GPS Zones thanks to the local NAVTEQ team; they truly embody the spirit that is 'totalmente' Palacio." The NAVTEQ map for Mexico includes 2,454 cities, almost 450,000 km of roads and covers the entire population. Twenty-three percent of that population is covered at NAVTEQ's highest quality levels: road network attribute verification, a specification distinctive to NAVTEQ maps. In addition to road network coverage, the Mexico map contains a full set of features including 58,000 points of interest (PoIs) such as restaurants, hotels, gas stations and banks enabling users to select their destination either by address or the PoI listing.
