Italy's National Mapping Agency Purchases Digital Elevation Mapping Data
Munich, Germany (SPX) May 26, 2009 Intermap Technologies has announced it has delivered 100,000 square kilometers of 3D digital elevation data to the Istituto Geografico Militare Italiano (IGMI), a national institution delegated to provide the Italian government with digital cartography and integrated feature data. This most recent delivery to the IGMI reinforces the value of Intermap's proactive creation of elevation data across Italy under the Company's NEXTMap Europe program. Before the completion of NEXTMap Europe, organizations were forced to settle for outdated, inaccurate, and non-uniform digital elevation data, or had to rely on expensive custom data collection efforts, to meet their needs. IGMI is using the NEXTMap elevation data to improve the national geospatial data infrastructure in Italy. The decision to acquire NEXTMap data was based on the success of the Torino 2006 IFSAR elevation mapping project. Covering 5,600 square kilometers of the Piemonte region, that project included some of northwestern Italy's most varied terrain, including the three most challenging environments to model - high alpine, lowland floodplain, and urban. The extreme differences in elevation, from mountain areas in the Alps to deeply incised river valleys, provided a serious test of the integrity of data collection and processing systems. The project earned Intermap top honors in the Photogrammetry / Elevation Data Generation category at the Management Association for Private Photogrammetric Surveyors (MAPPS) Geospatial Products and Services Excellence Awards in 2007. "We are pleased to expand our relationship with the IGMI beyond the initial program we performed in 2005 as the country prepared for the Torino Olympics," stated Adam Denman, Intermap's vice president and general manager, Europe. "IGMI performed rigorous testing on the data we previously supplied and was so satisfied with the quality of the NEXTMap data that it chose to acquire this additional dataset. As we have now added the remainder of the Western European countries to our data library, Intermap continues to see a trend of customers recognizing the value that NEXTMap datasets provide."
